But the game has changed. AI-augmented threats are not just an evolution; they are a complete re-imagining of cybercrime. More than half of the companies who are hit, lose money. And not just pocket change, but sums that could cripple a small or medium-sized business. A Case of Mistaken Identity

Imagine a scenario, based on real-world attacks. An accounts payable clerk receives a Slack message, seemingly from her manager, followed by a quick voice note. The voice is a perfect match. The message authorises an “urgent” payment to a supplier to avoid a supply chain disruption. The clerk, trained to be efficient and responsive, processes the payment. By the time anyone realises the manager never sent that message, the money is gone, routed through a complex web of cryptocurrency wallets and offshore accounts. The attackers used a snippet of the manager’s voice from a publicly available webinar to create the voice note. The entire heist took less than an hour.
This is the reality of phishing 2.0. Traditional security, which focuses on spotting malicious links or unusual email domains, is completely blind to this. The attack doesn’t rely on a technical vulnerability in your software, but on a vulnerability in human psychology, amplified by uncannily accurate technology.

The Great Disconnect: Knowing Isn’t Doing

Here’s the part that truly baffles me. C-suite executives and IT leaders are not ignorant of the problem. That same Dark Reading analysis found that awareness is sky-high. Some 71% of organisations claim that defending against deepfakes is a top priority. So, they know the threat is real and they say it’s important. Problem solved, right?
Wrong. In a spectacular display of cognitive dissonance, two-thirds of these same organisations haven’t invested a single penny in specialised defences to counter these threats.
This is like knowing a hurricane is barrelling towards your town, telling everyone how seriously you’re taking the hurricane warning, and then failing to buy any plywood to board up your windows. The awareness is there, but the action is completely absent. A staggering 88% of companies now provide some form of deepfake awareness training to employees. While laudable, this is dangerously insufficient. You cannot train an employee to reliably spot a high-quality audio deepfake. Expecting them to do so is not a strategy; it’s an abdication of responsibility.

Cybersecurity Investment Is Not an Optional Extra

The reluctance to invest is a classic case of short-term thinking. A proper cybersecurity investment in AI-powered defence tools might seem expensive, but it pales in comparison to the average loss of $167,000 from a single successful attack – not to mention the reputational damage and potential regulatory fines.
Organisations must shift their mindset. Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT cost centre; it’s a fundamental pillar of business continuity and corporate governance. You wouldn’t run a factory without a fire suppression system. Why are you running your digital operations without a credible defence against today’s most advanced threats?
The reluctance seems to stem from a misplaced confidence in old methods. As Eyal Benishti, CEO of Ironscales, points out, organisations believe their current security stack, designed for yesterday’s email-based threats, will somehow be adequate. This is wishful thinking. Traditional email gateways and firewalls aren’t designed for deepfake detection. They are looking for suspicious code, not a suspicious tone of voice.

Building a 21st-Century Fortress

So, what does a real defence look like? It’s not about finding a single magic bullet. It requires a multi-layered approach that combines human processes with advanced technology. Expecting your staff to be the primary line of defence is unfair and ineffective.

Here are the non-negotiable starting points:
Mandatory Multi-Level Authorisation: The single most effective, low-tech defence. Any request for a funds transfer, change in payment details, or sharing of sensitive data that comes in via email, voice note, or video call must be verified through a separate, pre-established channel. This could be a call to a known phone number or an in-person confirmation. No exceptions, especially for “urgent” requests. Urgency is the attacker’s greatest weapon.
Invest in AI-Powered Defence: You have to fight fire with fire. The only way to reliably detect an AI-generated fake is with another AI. A new class of security tools from companies like Darktrace and CrowdStrike are emerging that specialise in deepfake detection. They analyse video calls and audio streams in real-time for subtle artefacts and inconsistencies that the human ear or eye would miss. This is the cybersecurity investment that matters.
Smarter Training: Employee training still has a role, but it needs to change. Instead of just showing employees examples of bad deepfakes, training should focus relentlessly on process. Drill it into every employee that no matter how convincing or urgent a request sounds, they must follow the multi-level authorisation protocol. The goal isn’t to make them tech experts, but to make them process-adherent.

Organisations that continue to “prioritise” deepfake defence without actually making the necessary cybersecurity investment are not just taking a gamble; they are practically inviting disaster.
The era of trusting your ears and eyes in the digital realm is over. The question you need to be asking in your next board meeting is not if you will be targeted by AI-augmented threats, but what you are actually doing to prepare for when you are.
